A school snapshot amidst urban violence : what can be learned from a resilience rapid assessment - Honduras education resilience case report

This country report and the data presented herein are a product of the piloting of the RES-360 tool in Honduras. First, national level data was collected from government strategic plans, focus groups with Ministry of Education leadership, and secondary sources such as national studies on youth violence. Next, focus groups were conducted with teachers, parents, and students from two selected schools in low income neighborhoods affected by violence in the capital, Tegucigalpa.

Education and Conflict Recovery : The Case of Timor Leste

This paper analyzes the impact of the conflict on the level and access to education of boys and girls in Timor Leste. The authors examine the short-term impact of the 1999 violence on school attendance and grade deficit rates in 2001, and the longer-term impact of the conflict on primary school completion of cohorts of children observed in 2007. They compare the educational impact of the 1999 wave of violence with the impact of other periods of high-intensity violence during the 25 years of Indonesian occupation. The short-term effects of the conflict are mixed.

Great East Japan Earthquake: The education sector

Although the education sector sustained considerable damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE), it also played a key role in protecting lives. Importantly, it provided both civil protection hardware and software: school buildings served as evacuation shelters and transition shelters, and the school curricula ensured that children knew how to prepare for and react in emergencies. The performance of schools in responding to the GEJE provided a number of important lessons about the role of the education sector in disaster risk management.

This paper uses regression and matching techniques to evaluate Indonesia's Social Safety Net Scholarships Program. The scholarships program was developed to try and prevent large numbers of children from dropping out of school as a result of the Asian crisis. The expectation was that many families would find it difficult to keep their children in school and dropout rates would be high like they were during the 1980's recession.

Social Safety Nets in Fragile States: A Community-Based School Feeding Program in Togo

This paper reviews a small community-based school feeding program launched in Togo in response to the 2007/08 food price crisis. The discussion focuses on the operational and policy lessons emerging from the program, to better understand opportunities for scale up and sustainability in the future. A focus of the discussion is how to build safety nets in fragile states and in situations where there is weak and fragmented government capacity to deliver services to disadvantaged and vulnerable communities.

The Status of the Education Sector in Sudan

This publication is the first comprehensive overview of the education sector in Sudan. The challenge that remains is to design policy responses to the issues identified within the forthcoming education sector strategic plan. More important, these policies-already being discussed with the Ministry of General Education (MoGE) must be effectively implemented so that Sudan can make faster progress toward achieving the Education for All (EFA) targets and Millennium Development Goal's (MDGs).

This country report is based on a pilot approach to build on existing capacities in universities in fragile, conflict and violence-affected situations (FCS) in South Sudan, as part of the development of the Education Resilience Approaches (ERA) Program. An underlying principle of ERA is to support the local intellectual leadership and research capacity of countries facing different types of fragility, conflict or violence.
