At the heart of the World Bank Group education strategy 2020: learning for all is the recognition that a holistic, multidimensional approach is essential to achieve education for all. Student-centered learning is a precondition for achieving inclusion and equity for all students, especially those who are disadvantaged in society. This paper focuses on three groups who experience deeply entrenched disadvantages, inequity, exclusion, and discrimination in education: persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and sexual and gender minorities.

Looking at Gender and Socio-Emotional Skills Signaling in Turkey (English)

In the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region, only one in two working-age adults has a job, and the region is experiencing more and more limited job creation to absorb the working-age population. In some countries, only three out of ten women are working or looking for jobs, and across all countries, they have a harder time finding a job and spend more time looking for one.

Lesotho - Education Public Expenditure Review (English)

This Public Expenditure Review (PER) is the result of a collaboration among the World Bank Group, and Lesotho’s Ministries of Education and Finance, and is designed to inform Lesotho’s effort in expanding access to quality education services, while operating in a highly fiscally constraint environment. Although education spending is one of the highest in the world as a percentage of GDP (13.5 percent of GDP) and universal access to primary education enshrined in law, poor educational outcomes persist across the country.

Every Learner Matters : Unpacking the Learning Crisis for Children With Disabilities (English)

Aligned with the message of the World Bank’s 2018 World Development Report: Learning to Realize Education’s Promise, ‘Every Learner Matters’ argues that for children with disabilities, the focus needs to shift from school access to prioritizing learning. This paper examines education systems and the importance of measuring learning achievement for children with disabilities to respond appropriately to the needs of students.

This policy note is developed with the aim to inform the planning and implementation of the policy goals toward parenting support in Bulgaria. First, it summarizes the trends and concepts in parenting policies that influence the evolution of programs across Europe and other countries. Second, it offers a brief review of parenting components under the public policies in Bulgaria to foster discussions on the policy arrangements and implementation programs design needed to strengthen the outcomes of the existing systems and human development policies.

The economy is recovering slowly from drought, but Somalia continues to face significant challenges.The Somali economy rebounded in 2018 from the 2016/17 drought.Public finances continued to strengthen in 2018.Credit to the private sector grew rapidly in 2018, and Somalia’s financial sector supervisory capacity continued to strengthen.The current account deficit declined slightly.The medium-term outlook is for a moderate increase in GDP growth.This outlook is subject to significant risks and depends on continued policy reforms.

Pakistan at 100 : Shaping the Future 2047

Pakistan at hundred – Shaping the Future is the flagship report by World Bank Pakistan, focusing on long-term development opportunities for a more prosperous future. It articulates the key actions it needs to take to accelerate growth as it aspires to become an upper-middle-income country by 2047. Pakistan will need to significantly increase investment, spend more and better on education and health and ignite a transformation of its economy through increased competition and making better use of regional and global markets.

This policy note was prepared in parallel to the report Pakistan at hundred – Shaping the Future. The report Pakistan at hundred discusses options to accelerate and sustain growth in Pakistan so that the country becomes an upper middle-income country when it turns hundred years old in 2047. This policy note discusses inequality of opportunities women face in Pakistan. Excluding women from the labor force means that a large share of Pakistan’s greatest asset, its population, is being wasted.
