Global Scaling Up Handwashing Project: Results, Impacts, and Learning from Vietnam

The Vietnam Handwashing Initiative (HWI) began in January 2006 with the goal of reducing morbidity and mortality from diarrheal diseases in children less than five years of age. In December 2006, Vietnam became one of four countries in the Water and Sanitation Program's (WSP) Global Scaling Up Handwashing Project. The objective of the project was to learn how to stimulate improved hand washing behaviors at large scale, sustain the activities after the project ended, and measure the impact on behavioral, health, and welfare outcomes.

School Quality, Labor Markets and Human Capital Investments: Long-Term Impacts of an Early Stage Education Intervention in the Philippines

[Impact Evaluation] This paper examines the long-term impacts of improved school quality at the elementary school stage on subsequent schooling investments and labor market outcomes using unique data from a recent survey that tracked students in the Philippines. The empirical results, which are based on a comparison of students who graduated from schools located in adjacent treatment and control areas before and after a school intervention, show significant differences in subsequent schooling investments, migration, and labor market earnings between females and males.

This brief summarizes the results of a gender impact evaluation study, entitled Early childhood development through an integrated program : evidence from the Philippines, conducted in 1999 in Philippines. The study observed the impact of early childhood development (ECD) to control a variety of observed characteristics measured at the municipality, barangay, household, and child level and unobserved fixed characteristics, with differential impacts by age of children and duration of exposure to the program on the child level.

The role of preschool quality in promoting child development : evidence from rural Indonesia

This paper reports on the quality of early childhood education in rural Indonesia. On average, the paper finds that centers created under the Indonesia Early Childhood Education and Development Project provide higher quality services than other types of preschools, as measured by a comprehensive instrument of preschool quality based on direct observation of classrooms in session (the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale-Revised).
